ARTIST STATEMENT

Completing the Cirlce

In 2004, I visited Shikoku; my first trip back to Japan in over 40 years. My goal for this project is to return to Shikoku and complete this circle, with the core of this process being my experience, interaction, and transformation during the journey, which will be reflected in photographs, soundscapes, installations and a book.

The project involves the customary visit on the main island of Honshu to Mt. Koya, the final resting spot of Kobo Daishi, the saint who inspired the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Then, I will walk the pilgrimage pathway clockwise around the perimeter of the island, traveling from temple to temple.

I intend to create a body of wabi sabi-inspired photographic interpretations of what I experience on the path, capturing the effects of time, light, shadow, and spirit.
